Self-funded Activities

Self-funded activities fall into two categories, each of which have differing approval processes:

College Credit Activities

  • financial flexibility to deal with changes in the relevant educational market;
  • no impact on current (or reasonable expectations of future) SCH generation;
  • contributes to the overall vision of the College and the University;

Continuing Education

(Non-college credit programs, certificate programs, non-college credit courses)

In our knowledge based economy, it is necessary for individuals to continue to update skills and broaden knowledge throughout their careers. University of Florida colleges and units offer a wide variety of instruction for these adult learners in the form of non college credit continuing education. The internationally recognized form of tracking attendance for these continuing education activities is the Continuing Education Unit (CEU).

The CEU is a measurement of participation in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction. Adhering to International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) guidelines, the term CEU is used by sponsors and licensing boards that require mandatory continuing education hours for license renewal and who typically add their own terms of approval.

For example:

  • Certified Public Accounts - CPE (Continuing Professional Education);
  • Architects and Interior Designers - CEH (Continuing Education Hour);
  • Veterinarians - CPE (Continuing Professional Education);
  • Physicians - CME (Continuing Medical Education);
  • Engineers - PDH (Professional Development Hours); Building Construction  CE (Continuing Education);
  • Pharmacy - CPE (Continuing Pharmacy Education)
