The Division of Continuing Education (DCE) upholds and extends the mission of the University of Florida by providing access to quality education and flexible learning for working professionals, traditional and non-traditional students wherever they are located.

The Division of Continuing Education (DCE) is a leader in continuing education serving diverse populations, meeting critical workforce needs, reaching local, national and global markets, generating programming in collaboration with the UF community and industry experts providing excellence in both traditional and non-traditional education.

DCE History

1919 Creation of the General Extension Division, a centralized state administrative office housed at and administratively attached to the University of Florida. Correspondence courses first offered.
1954 Founding of the UF English Language Institute.
1961 Florida Institute for Continuing University Studies (FICUS) replaced General Extension Division. Administratively separate from and equal to other state universities.
1965 Responsibility for extension education decentralized to the individual universities of State University System.
1969 Department of Special Programs offering meeting planning services.
1972 Division of Continuing Education (DOCE) formed after significant changes in the State University System.
1974 Center for Training, Research and Education for Environmental Occupations (TREEO) designated as a state training center. Department of Special Programs renamed Department of Conferences and Seminars.
1976 TREEO formally merged into DOCE.
1999 Department of Executive Education created within DOCE.
2001 Division retitled Distance, Continuing and Executive Education (DCE), with the incorporation of UF Distance Learning. Correspondence courses start accepting online submission of assignments.
2006 Division returned to the title of Division of Continuing Education (DCE). First completely online correspondence study course offered.
2008 Department of Allied Health Programs created within DCE.
2009 DCE placed under the Associate Provost for IT, E-Learning and Distance Learning.
